Bible options have exploded in recent years so deciding on what is the best version of the Bible has become a bit more exciting.

What is the Best Version of the Bible?

Bible translations range from formal (word-for-word) to dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought) approaches. Choosing a version and translation typically depends on your personal preferences.

Formal Translations

Formal Bible translations are known as literal or word-for-word translations. They are prized for their accuracy and structure.

The goal of these translations is to faithfully represent the words and syntax of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts in which the Bible was originally written.

Popular Formal Translations:

  • New American Standard Bible (NASB)
  • New King James Version (NKJV)
  • English Standard Version (ESV)

Formal Bible translations sacrifice a little in the area of readability. They are favored by engineers and technical types who prefer accuracy and precision.

As an engineer, I admit to having all 3 versions at hand.

Moderate Translations

Moderate Bible translations seek to strike a balance between linguistic accuracy and readability. These translations try to make the Bible easier to read for a wide range of readers without straying from the original texts.

Moderate Bible Translations:

  • Christian Standard Bible (CSB)
  • The Readable Bible (TRB)
  • God’s Word Translation (GW)

These versions tend to be a good choice for most men. I don’t have any of these personally since I prefer the formal translations, but I would go with a Christian Standard version if I decided to own one.

Functional Translations

Functional Bible translations focus on conveying the meaning and message of the original texts rather than a strict word-for-word rendering. These translations make Scripture clear and relevant for contemporary readers.

  • New International Version (NIV)
  • New Living Translation (NLT)
  • New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)

Functional translations excel in conveying the Bible’s teachings in a way that resonates with today’s audiences. They offer a valuable entry point into the Bible and make it easy to develop a daily reading habit.

The NLT is quickly becoming the most popular Bible translation, while The NIV is still on top as the most purchased translation..

What is the Best Bible Translation?

Formal translations are valued for their accuracy in preserving the exact words and structure of the ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts. This is crucial for scholars, theologians, and those engaged in in-depth biblical study.

Moderate translations preserve the Bible’s nuances while offering clarity. They bridge the gap between accessibility and accuracy, appealing to a broad audience with diverse needs and preferences.

Functional translations excel in conveying the Bible’s essential message and moral lessons that can be easier to understand. Their approach allows for a smooth and engaging read.
