have faith in Jesus

Faith is a personal aspect of the human experience, and it serves as the foundation of Christianity. Faith offers a sense of purpose, guidance, and hope. But how can one know if their faith is genuine?

In this article, we will explore the concept of the “7 evidences of faith,” providing insight into how faith manifests and strengthens in our walk with Jesus.

What are the 7 Evidences of Faith?

The 7 evidences of faith are trust, hope, obedience, perseverance, surrender, love, and fruit of the spirit.

1. Trust in God’s Promises

The first evidence of faith is trust in God’s promises. Faith begins with a firm belief that God is faithful and will fulfill His promises. These promises can include salvation, guidance, provision, and the assurance of His presence.

God can’t lie. In the book of Hebrews we find an example of trust in God’s promise:

By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.

Hebrews 11:11 (NASB)

2. Unwavering Hope

Hope is knowing that you have a brighter future ahead despite your current trials and tribulations. Having faith builds hope in the goodness and sovereignty of God. Hope is a powerful evidence of faith.

Romans 5 affirms the connection between hope and faith:

and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5 (NASB)

3. Active Obedience

Genuine faith is displayed through active obedience. This obedience comes from the desire to align your life with God’s will and commandments.

James emphasizes the importance of faith and works:

For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

James 2:26 (NASB)

This doesn’t mean that we are saved by works though. It means that true transformation and belief in Jesus does result in works because we become more like Him. Works are a byproduct of who we become in Christ.

4. Perseverance Through Trials

Our faith is tested and refined through trials and tribulations. One of the evidences of faith is your ability to endure challenges with patience and to recover from challenges quickly.

Perseverance through trials

1 Peter illustrates this concept:

so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1 Peter 1:7 (NASB)

We go through our trials in life and come out stronger when Jesus and The Holy Spirit are with us.

5. Surrender and Trust in God’s Timing

Faith often involves surrendering our own plans and trusting in God’s timing. It requires acknowledging that God’s plan is greater and wiser than your own.

For me this shows up frequently when I try to take a shortcuts in life. God is responsible for our success. You and I both would be better off just being obedient and patient.

Proverbs 3 tells us to:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)

6. Love and Compassion for Others

Faith is inseparable from love and compassion for others. A genuine faith is marked by kindness, empathy, and a desire to serve.

I have found that people are not lovable without faith. It’s a constant battle that I’m not capable of winning without faith and the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5 highlights this connection:

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

Galatians 5:6 (NASB)

7. Fruit of the Spirit

The final evidence of faith is having the fruit of the Spirit. This includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5).

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB)

These qualities are the result of your life being guided by faith and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Faith is a dynamic and transformative force that shapes our relationship with the God and influences our interactions with the world around us.
